LANDFILL AND HAZARDOUS WASTE – HYDROGEOLOGY AND GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS

GCS has specialised expertise relating to hydrogeological investigations at waste disposal sites. GCS was consulted during the formulation of the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) “Minimum Requirements” document and co-developed the WASP Methodology for the Water Research Commission.

GCS has expertise in the following areas:

Site selection

Landfill site selection studies are conducted which evaluate the geology, soils, hydrogeology, geotechnical aspects, surface water, environmental, social and economic suitability of potential sites.

Detailed field investigations

Detailed field investigations include test pits, geological and soil mapping, permeability testing, geophysical investigations and drilling of site characterisation and monitoring boreholes.

Permit applications and maintenance objectives

Motivation reports include risk assessments and management requirements for inclusion in applications for new sites, operation of sites and closure of sites.

Groundwater Monitoring and Impact Assessments of existing sites are conducted. All studies are conducted in accordance with the latest Norms and Standards documents as published as part of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008, as well as the Minimum Requirements for Waste Disposal by Landfill, 2005 compiled by the Department of Water Affairs.
